3. 国内外研究现状

1. A Review on National Image

Research on national image enjoys great popularityin academia at home and abroad. Sun Youzhong [孙有中](2002:16) defined national image as “a country’s internal public andexternal public’s understanding and evaluation of the country’s political, economic, social, cultural, and geographical conditions”. Tang Liping [唐丽萍](2016) pointed out that national image research is the product of mutualdialogue between disciplines such as international relations, socialpsychology, journalism and communication. China''''''''s national image has been describedand analyzed from different academic perspectives by many experts and scholars, mainly involving the fields of journalism communication and politics. In recentyears, the research results of linguistic theory have provided a new viewpointfor the construction of national image in the discourse level.

With regard to the research material selection, originaltexts and translated texts are two major types. Original texts are mainly foreignmedia news reports and speeches. For example, He [贺海珍](2019) and Hu [胡晓斌](2021) both chosecertain news reports from the internationally recognized US mainstreamnewspaper-the New York Times (NYT), as the research material. Shao[邵斌] amp; Hui[回志明](2014) collected relevantarticles on LexisNexis, a foreign online newspaper database, to explore Westernmedia’s interpretation of the 'Chinese Dream'. Translated texts aremainly news texts, literary texts, China''''''''s political documents and pressconferences(e.g., Chen [陈建梅], 2020; Hu [胡开宝] amp; Tian [田绪军], 2018; Liu [刘朋], 2010; Shang [尚文博]), which can be regarded as the carrier of self-constructionof China’s image (Chen Linlin, 2018). Hu Kaibao and Li Xin (2017) pointed out that translated texts, served the same as original texts, couldaffecting the public’s perception of other countries or nations in theinternational community. Thus, it is necessary to extend national image studiesfrom original texts to translated texts.
