1. 研究目的与意义
Jane Austen is one of the most well-known writers in England. She wrote many novels during her life which cover the topics of love, marriage, female education and feminism. In her novels, what impresses me most is her point of marriage. Her marriage view seems unique in her age. It presents her view about love and position. Studying on her marriage view can be a wonderful way to figure out what the famous writer likes. As her most well-known novel, Pride and Prejudice is worth of being analyzed. What#8217;s more, this novel shows us four typical kinds of marriage views. Obviously, one of them represents the common view in her age. And one view of marriage is what Jane Austen is in favor of. It is the differences of marriage views that help us create a living Jane Austen in our mind. Thinking about those four types of views, we could have a more profound understanding of the relationship between love, lust, marriage and money or social position. Views of marriage are not only associated with what we think about love and money, but also with our point of life. Marriage is an important topic that we should consider carefully about. It is necessary to write an essay about marriage views in Pride and Prejudice.
2. 研究内容和预期目标
In this paper, I want to analyze the different kinds of marriage views in Pride and Prejudice. There are four typical types respectively expressed by Elizabeth, Jane, Lydia and Charlotte. They reflect totally different relations between love, money, lust and marriage. Compared with Jane Austen#8217;s marriage condition in real life, we will draw a conclusion on how Jane Austen considers marriage and which of the four is her view of marriage.
3. 国内外研究现状
So far, many people have studied on Jane Austen. According to Vivien Jones, however much students enjoy their reading of a Jane Austen novel, many find it difficult to know how to organize their responses. So she writes How to Study a Jane Austen Novel to help us develop a firm grasp of Jane Austen#8217;s characters and themes. In the chapter which talks about Pride and Prejudice, she discusses this novel in detail, briefly summarizing the plot and then analyzing about a dozen pages to show Pride and Prejudice#8217;s theme. She concludes the theme of the novel as relationship between money and marriage. The four couples in the novel all have their different attitudes to marriage and money. Besides, in The Role of Marriage in Jane Austen''s ''Pride and Prejudice'', Katrin Schmidt writes that marriage is the main theme of the novel. He compares the different kinds of marriages described in the novel putting emphasis on the marriage of the heroine and the hero. He shows the importance of marriage in women''s eyes in the 18th century. He reveals that marriage in Pride and Prejudice is not only the essence romantic novels are made of but rather important to the existence of women in the 18th century. In China, there are many dissertations that analyze marriage views as well. Zhu Xiaoqing wrote in her essay love and marriage in Pride and Prejudice that Jane Austen successfully expresses her viewpoint of marriage and love by Pride and Prejudice. In Zhu#8217;s paper, she tried to make a deep analysis of four marriages. She made excellent conclusions about those four marriages. She concludes different kinds of relationships between money, love and marriage. In the past or in recent years, there are always heaps of researches about marriage views in Pride and Prejudice. What I try to show in my paper is the different marriage views in the novel and Jane Austen#8217;s marriage view in real life. The differences of marriage will be discussed in the paper. To different people, marriage has their different criteria. However, the most undesirable one which only leads to adversity can be fixed in my paper.
