1. 研究目的与意义

Euphemism is a significant linguistic and sociolinguistic phenomenon and euphemism certainly affects the human language. In general, people are provided with certain things or notions to refrain from embarrassment. They often use agreeable, courteous or innocuous words to replace those offensive ones. People in English-speaking countries also need to use pleasant language when speaking of disagreeable or embarrassing facts in their communications. So euphemism has become the lubricant in daily communications.

With the unprecedented development of society and growth of economy, globalization is keeping accelerating, which suggests that there are more and more cross-cultural communications. Euphemism is an indispensable lubricant in cross-cultural communication and is given rich cultural connotation. But people in China still can not use English euphemism accurately at times because of lack of the cultural connotations of English euphemism. As cross-country trades are increasing, it is pressing for us to reduce such failure in cross-cultural communication.

In the researches on euphemism, most of them are in terms of semantics, rhetoric and pragmatics. Also with the development of the language, there are many changes happened in the scope, function, and expression of euphemisms. Thus, it is essential for us to study the application of English euphemism to facilitate the cross-cultural communication.

3. 国内外研究现状

Language and culture are related to each other, learning language inevitably involves different cultural backgrounds that language reflects. As a linguistic and cultural phenomenon in both English and Chinese, euphemism has become a kind of lubricant in communication and has aroused wide interest among scholars both at home and abroad.

In the early 1780s, an English writer Gorge Blunt used euphemism firstly. He defined that euphemism is a good of favorable interpretation of a bad word. And then many other scholars also did some researches on euphemism. The American Language(1936), edited by Menken, discussed the emergence and prevalence of euphemism meticulously. James George Frazer is one of the earliest researchers in the field of euphemism. He used a lot of words to study taboo, behavior and name about euphemism in A Golden Bough-A Study in Magic and Religion (1991). In 1981, British linguist Hugh Rawson edited A Dictionary of Euphemism and Other Double-talk which summarized the achievements in euphemism study from British and American linguists. In 1983, the American scholar, Neaman and Silver, published a dictionary called Kind Word--A Treasure of Euphemisms which described the origin, history, development and changes of euphemisms in detail. Allen and Burridge writed Euphemism and Dysphemism in 1991, which is one of the popular reference books in domestic studies.

Studies of euphemism in China can be divided into five different parts. They are semantics, sociolinguistics, rhetoric, psychics and pragmatic. Shu DingFang (1989, 1995) elaborated three principles of the use of euphemism and communication according to Grice and Leech#8217;s theory --cooperative principle, politeness principle and the principle of self-protection. She also proposed problems left to be solved in the field of euphemism which has a profound effect on the study of euphemism. From 1970s to 1980s, foreign theories of sociolinguistics were introduced to China. The social functions of euphemism aroused Chinese scholars#8217; interest. In 1983, Chen Yuan edited a book called Sociolinguistics, which is the most famous book about euphemism at that time. Chen Yuan discussed the profound historical and social background of euphemism and revealed the social nature of euphemism. He also quoted a lot of examples of euphemism to analyze the formation and application of euphemism.

However, those studies mentioned above do not target on politics, military and advertisements. So this thesis aims to analyze in more detailed study of English euphemism about politics, military and advertisements in cross-cultural communication.
