Emily Dickinson is a great poetess in the history of American literature. By analyzing the home images in a certain number of Emily Dickinson’s poems, this study tends to reveal the inner relationship between Emily’s living place and her creative inspiration, showing the importance of home to Dickinson’s creation. From the perspective of metaphor analysis, this paper studies the home images in Dickinson’s poems, and interprets the homeland awareness of “resisting oppression and pursuing freedom” expressed by the poet in her poems, expands the connotation of humanistic care in her poems, and then elaborates its realistic significance and enlightenment to the current social home-leaving issues. It is necessary to re-study on the basis of the predecessors, which will offer readers and later researchers a different perspective of Dickinson’s poetry. The background research on Dickinson'' s poetry creation is conducive to deepening the understanding of the different kinds of images in her poetry and can enrich current research.

Ever since the publication of The Complete Poems of Emily Dickinson, edited by Thomas H. Johnson in 1955, researchers in the 20th century and beyond have criticized and studied the American poet Emily Dickinson from various angles and levels, the results has been productive. The themes of Emily Dickinson’s poetry are very varied, mainly divided into nature, love, death, religion and eternity. The Three characteristics of Emily Dickinson’s study are listed as in the following: biographical study, cultural and historical context study and text study.

Research Abroad:

The study of Emily Dickinson in foreign countries is earlier than that at home, so the monographs and papers are very rich. It can be roughly divided into the following categories:

First, self-awareness and positive elements in Dickinson’s poems have attracted the attention of many researchers. It is clear that Dickinson lived in an age when women were subordinate and men were dominant. For women at that era were excluded from the public stage, Dickinson’s home was an important place to Emily where she can do what she wanted like writing poems without others’ interference. In the issue of The Literary World, Arlo Bates made the following comment, 'It is a case of arrested development for which another life seems to offer the only consolation in delayed opportunity'.
