1. 研究目的与意义

Nominalization occurs sufficiently in persons#8217; daily life, because its important and prominent features in English news discourse that persons are widely exposed to. The functional analysis of nominalization may pose a new dimension of discourse analysis, which is a popular term in the academic field nowadays. This study has strong pedagogical implications. In order to better communicate with each other, we need to learn and master this important language feature. The functional analysis of nominalization could enable students to understand that language form should be learned together with its function, and this could improve English learners#8217; English writings and their communicative competence. Due to its distinctive features and crucial roles in our everyday life, all analysis of news discourse, especially in terms of its use of nominalization could help reveal the distinctive features of news discourses, improve people#8217;s understanding of news discourse, facilitate the exchange of information, and at the same time assist journalists to produce better news discourses.

2. 研究内容和预期目标

The focus of this study, on the basis of the theoretical framework of Halliday#8217;s Systemic-functional Grammar, is to investigate how nominalization is used in English news discourses in terms of three meta-functions, that is, ideational, interpersonal, and textual functions.

The research materials analyzed in the present study are mainly collected from New York Times, Washington Post, Time, and Newsweek in America; The Guardian and Times in Britain; China Daily and People#8217;s Daily in China; etc.

This essay consists of five parts. Chapter one introduces the background of this study, reveals the significance of the study and presents the outline of the thesis. Chapter two serves as a literature review related to this study, explains how the present study is gradually evolved out from the previously conducted researches, including the relevant studies on nominalization from different linguistic schools and study on news discourses with the purpose for providing an overall idea about the subject matter and prepare for the further analysis in the following chapters. Chapter Three illustrates the ideational functions of nominalization in English news discourse. Chapter Four exemplifies the interpersonal functions of nominalization in news discourse from the perspective of objectivity and non-negotiability and demonstrates the textual functions of nominalization in English news discourse. The last chapter is the conclusion, in which major findings of the present study are summarized, followed by its pedagogical implications and limitations.

3. 国内外研究现状

The study of nominalization can be traced back to Ancient Greece. Although they have not proposed the concept of nominalization, Plato and Aristotle divide words into two parts of speech: nominal constituents and verbal constituents. Structural linguistics analyzes the structure of nominalization and some problems from the angle of the vocabulary form and Jespersen studies nominalization much earlier and he analyzes a series of questions aroused by nominalization in his book Analytic Syntax. Then researches on nominalization have been conducted from multi-perspective. Transformational-generative linguistics has a clear classification of nominalization based on the form of nominalization. Systemic-functional grammar#8217;s study for nominalization is more thorough and more systemic, and Halliday as a representative explains nominalization from the perspective of grammatical metaphor. Cognitive linguistics regards the process of nominalization as the ideational process and Langacker classifies nominalization in his book Foundation of Cognitive Grammar, which can be regarded as the basic study of nominalization from the aspect of cognitive linguistics (1987). Based on the above introduction, it is obvious that systemic-functional grammar has its own unique effect when they explain the phenomenon of nominalization. Systemic-functional grammar proposes an unique explanation from its experience and the angle of grammatical metaphor, and the study for the phenomenon of nominalization has been placed to an unpredictable degree. A brief literature review can not only give some basic information of nominalization study already made, but also provide some useful implication and enlightenment for the present study.

From the perspective of structural linguistics, many scholars have regarded nominalization as a metaphor form. Zhao Dequan points out the three kinds of metaphors in English newspapers and the underlying reasons as well as their functions in these texts (2005). Zhang Delu applies the theory of functional grammar when he analyzes news discourses (1998). He remarks that the grammatical features of its lexical choice of news reports, semantic structures and text structures are decided by the contextual factors. Xu Yang (2007) also applies Halliday#8217;s functional theory in an overview of news discourses from the perspective of Halliday#8217;s three metafunctions, that is, ideational, interpersonal and textual functions.
